Today's Favorite Pets-4-13-2012

Today's Dog

Chesty, the Dog of the Day
Name:Chesty
Age:Fifteen years old
Gender:MaleBreed:Chow Chow,
Golden Retriever
Home:Hayward, California, USA

T
his is Chesty. To those who know, it is the same name as the Marine Corps mascot. He is also known as... Pup, my pup, Monster pup, and Chestydawg. I wanted a rugged, fearless "guy's dog," and I got one. He was five weeks old and ran up to my biggest horse and played bowed him to wrestle. He is Chow Chow and Golden Retriever mix. It has been a great joy to watch his DNA at work. The Chow Chow makes him sooo loyal and a very one man dog, and the Golden makes him a great hunter! Both breeds gave him a beautiful coat, and lord how he hates the mailman!!

He pulled me out of depression and dragged me back into the world. When I first got him, he would go out in the back yard every day, go to the woodpile, find a piece of kindling, and chew it to bits in the middle of my apartment. He was teething and finding his own solution, leaving a perfect little pile of wood chips. Until the day he realized that the only time I did not play with him, was when I was reading or working on the PC. That day I came home and found a perfect little pile of my glasses. Smart boy!

His first night, I figured since he was away from the litter, he would want body heat and heartbeat. I took him onto the bed and cuddled up. He lasted five minutes, and went down to the foot of the bed, and put his chin on my ankle. He has slept there for fifteen years.

Gosh, the first three years it was just Chesty and me. I had a pick-up truck, he would jump in and sit at my right, him staring out the front window eager to take off. It had a camper shell, and sometimes we would just go until we were tired and sleep on a mattress in the back. He is totally fearless and very adventurous. On rainy Saturdays we would take our early morning walk, come home to sit on the couch and watch K-9 to 5 together, and he would really watch.

He loves water. We lived very to close to the water in the Bay area. He would wade in all the time. One day he saw some ducks and wanted to chase them. He took off! I tried to stop him, and then realized he had to be swimming. About the time I realized it, so did he! He immediately turned around, then decided he wanted the ducks and turned back, then the ducks took off, and he realized, swimming was good! Swimming was fun! Now on rainy days he will go and just stand in puddles! I think it is time for a drive to the water this weekend!

He is now fifteen years old. Chesty is sundowning. Arthritis is slowing him way down. We have started medication, and now I am glad to report the medications are working! I came home from work after his first day on them and he stood up, smiled, and walked to the car for his trip to the park! I am sooo happy! I could tell a million stories... but he is, simply put, the bestest dog in the world.

Today's Cat

Salmon, the Cat of the Day
Name:Salmon
Age:Twelve years old
Gender:Female
Kind:Domestic longhair
Home:Everett, Washington, USA

S
almon was born July 19, 1999 our 25th wedding anniversary. How often is it that a pet born on a special day as your 25th anniversary right to the day? Salmon was born under the dresser in my room with four other babies. we kept Salmon when we gave the kittens away after they got old enough. Salmon is fixed and never had babies. Her given name is Samantha, but we have always called her Salmon for short.

Salmon is now twelve years old and has been a blessing to me and my wife. Salmon likes to stay indoors most of the time and sleep on our bed at night. She is a great lap cat, always jumping up on our laps for love and purrs a lot. When Salmon was younger she ran around everywhere but last couple of years she mellowed out. One time when we got another cat, and Salmon hid outside for about a month before getting used to Bappi and coming back into the house. When we got David a few months later, Salmon adjusted well with David when we took him in. We have four cats now: Salmon, David, Buttons, and Blanca. David and Salmon have bonded together and always with each other. When Buttons was born, Salmon welcomed him with open paws.

Salmon is the queen of house and has been all her life. Salmon is an old cat now and in good health and has been really a sweet cat all her life to us. We do a Salmon cheer as follows Salmon Berry, Salmon Berry rah rah rah (twice) then S-A-L--M-O-N -- B-E-R-R-Y, Salmon Berry RAH. She love it when we do the Salmon cheer. We love Salmon as much as she loves us.

Salmon is so sweet and adorable always purring. She is so special. She is queen of all the cats at our house. I love her with all my heart.

Today's Pet

Nils, the Pet of the Day
Name:Nils
Age:Male
Gender:Male
Kind:German Riding Pony
Home:Gablau, Germany

T
his is my horse (he's a pony, really) and his name is Nils. He is a Deutsches Reitpony (German Riding Pony) and lives at the stable in Gablau.

I like my pet, he is very pretty and very crazy sometimes. Nils likes carrots and horse treats, he likes to drink from blue and white buckets better than any other color. He likes to jump big obstacles and crosses, and that is very fun for us both. He usually come right up to me when I get there, so I cannot get a good picture - they just end up being of his nose in my camera. So I was glad to get this one when he was lying down and holding almost still for once! He is the best horse in the world for me

Today's Favorite Pets-4-14-2012

Today's Dog

Blue, the Dog of the Day
Name:Blue
Age:Seven years old
Gender:MaleBreed:German Shepherd, Husky
Golden Retriever
Home:Ontario, Canada

I
had always wanted a dog. I had a couple when I was really little but I hardly remember them. One day my parents said that a friend of the family's dog had a litter of puppies. So we went to check them out. There sure were a lot of puppies and we played with them all and finally the soon-to-be-Blue was chosen! We had to wait a couple of weeks for them to be ready to leave their mother but the day finally came when we could pick up our pup. He is a German Shepherd, Husky, Golden Retriever mix. At first we were going to name him Buddy but it seemed too common. So we named him after his icy-blue eyes. Since then it has been seven years. I remember some good memories like how Blue used to hate going for walks as a puppy until he met another dog who loved going for walks. Now if you say 'walk' Blue runs for his leash. I also remember not being able to sleep one night so I had started down the stairs to sit with my parents for a bit. I overheard them talking about getting rid of Blue, I was so upset that I ran back to my bedroom. The next day my Mom told how someone almost broke into our house the night before after they went to bed. Blue barked and growled until my Dad had come down to see what was wrong. When they look in the back yard there was a guy dressed in dark clothing trying to get back over the fence. Who knows if they guy was dangerous or not, either way Blue saved us and he was allowed to stay.

Blue is a big dog, he doesn't meet many dogs his size and when he does he does he acts all surprised. Sometimes he is afraid of little dogs and will hide behind me but he eventually comes out to say 'hi'. He thinks he is a lap dog and loves to sleep on my lap. It started when he was a puppy and he just never outgrew it the habit, although he outgrew my lap a long time ago. He is friendly, calm & loyal as well as my best friend. Blue has always been there for me when I was angry or upset and never once has he judged me. He is getting older now and our walks are getting shorter but I am cherishing every moment that I have with him.

Today's Cat

Zoey, the Cat of the Day

Name:Zoey
Age:Ten months old
Gender:Female
Kind:Tuxedo tabby
Home:Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA

M
eet Zoey! She is a ten month old Tuxedo cat. I came across her this summer when she was only a little kitten lost in the woods near our home. She followed us home and she hasn't stopped following me since! She definitely knows who her Mommy is!

Contrary to what I would expect with a tiny kitten, Zoey didn't shy away from us at all, but rather climbed right up and started purring and nuzzling my face! She is the most affectionate and lovable cat I've ever had. I could tell she was so grateful to be welcomed into our loving home and given lots of food to eat. Zoey loves to be close and always needs to be touching me with at least one paw. I think it's to make sure I'm not going anywhere when she takes a cat nap. If I need her to follow me somewhere, all I have to say is, "I'm leaving without you," and she runs after me because the poor thing doesn't want to be left alone again.

Zoey loves to snuggle up close to me and take naps but she also loves to play! Her favorite toy is her feather stick. She is like a circus cat jumping about three feet up in the air trying to catch this colorful toy. She loves climbing trees and sunbathing outside. Another one of her favorite things to do is sit on the deck next to the bird feeder. She is fascinated by all the birds and insects outside and can entertain herself for hours playing in the yard. She thinks she is a tiger prowling around in the high grass.

Zoey is fearless. She always needs to be right in the action, especially when food is involved. She thinks the dining room table is an acceptable place for a nap and loves seeking out the perfect hiding spot from which to plan an attack. She will even take on our dog Tanner! He's less than thrilled over being suddenly pounced on by the cat. Zoey's personality is the best of both worlds. She is such a beautiful and loving cat but also is a playful and loyal companion like a dog would be. She even tries to play fetch in the yard, though she is still trying to figure out how to bring the ball back. She is even a veteran car rider! I never hear so much as a peep from her when we go for rides but sometimes she will stick her paw out of the carrier so we can hold hands. She is always sad when she can't go along but she watches in the window for me to come home and runs downstairs to the door to greet me every time.

From rags to riches, this little princess is now very spoiled and living the good life. Not only has she found a loving home and a mommy who adores her, but I have gained a lifelong friend as well.

Today's Pet

Gemini, the Pet of the Day
Name:Gemini
Age:Three months old
Gender:Female
Kind:Guinea Pig
Home:Marion, Mississippi, USA

G
emini is special I believe because of her coloring. From one side she looks solid brown even down her front leg and from the other she is more tan than brown. She looks like two different Guinea Pigs If you see just one side of her, so that helped give her her name, as Gemini is known as "the twins" in astrology!

She is new to our home, and we got her to be a companion for our other guinea pig, Gidget. So far, she is settling in, and she loves the "hay holder" and the "snuggle sack' I knitted for her. I don't know whether she thought the hay sack was for her to hide in, or she was just trying it out for size! She's sill a baby, so she has lots of growing to do, but she is already an intrepid explorer, and very curious about everything, as you can see from her pictures!

Today's Dog

Finney, the Dog of the Day
Name:Finney
Age:Ten years old
Gender:MaleBreed:Shih Tzu
Home:Ste Anne, Ontario, Canada

H
i there! My name is Finney and I am a Shih Tzu. That means Lion Dog and let me tell you I am as brave any lion but far more important as my ancestors came from the Emperor's Palace in China!

The first eight years of my life were very sad as I lived in a horrible place called a puppy mill where I was used to breed and never treated well or kindly and had no family to adore me ... but then I was rescued and eventually adopted by my foster family who fell in love with me and couldn't bear to part with me. I am now so happy and love living here with all the other dogs in the house - there is a Bichon called Ben who is my permanent best doggie friend and always at least four other foster fluffs to play with me when I feel like romping. Of course I am the Doggie King of the Castle but I am very kind and protective of them all (even the cat!).

Every night before I go to sleep on my own soft blanket on the big bed, I get to have a really good time and a play with my two teddies and a belly rub from Dad whom I love more than anyone in the world. I am so happy to be here for the rest of my life!

Yes, Finney is a real Dad's boy and follows my husband everywhere. Finn is a real character and not a day goes by without him doing something to make us both laugh and love him even more. He is loving, sweet and kind to all the dogs he meets and we are very lucky to have him as our furkid!

Rescue dogs (and cats) are the best!

Today's Cat

Frodo, the Cat of the Day
Name:Frodo
Age:Nine months old
Gender:Male
Kind:Cat
Home:Cochrane, Alberta, Canada

T
his is an adventure, not unlike Lord of the Rings ... because this Frodo passed through death as well, only to live, and so the adventure began.

My husband and I decided we were ready to find a new cat, as we lost our beautiful orange boy Puffin in the fall. We traveled to an acreage where we knew there was a litter of kittens with an orange one. We arrived to find the kittens panicked and scared because the previous night their momma and a sibling had met their demise by wild animals. Those remaining kittens had survived by climbing to the highest part of the outdoor cat house they lived in, all the while hearing the terrifying sound of decimation below.

Frodo was the only orange kitten in a litter with two black siblings. We were told that because of his bright color he would be easy pickings for the predators that roamed the acreage. So I eagerly wrapped him in my coat and drove home with our little bundle, knowing he was not only a survivor but an adventurer, so he was aptly named Frodo.

Frodo quickly adjusted to life indoors, although he loves to sit in the window watching the world go by; he loves to climb to the top of our screen door and chases anything that moves, including his big sister Iggy, much to her chagrin. He is a delight every day, making our home lively with the sound of his thundering paws. But at night, when all is quiet, he loves to crawl right under our covers and sleep the night away, knowing he is safe and sound and loved.

Momo, the Pet of the Day
Name:Momo
Age:Four years old
Gender:Female
Kind:Tortoise
Home:Germany

M
y pet is a tortoise. Her name is Momo and she's four years old. For a tortoise, that means she's still a baby, really. She lives in a terrarium most of the time, but when the sun shines she's outside. She loves to wander around the garden exploring.

Her favourite food is salad and strawberries most of all, and she drinks water. I like her very much, because she is so sweet and small.

She likes to walk outside and she likes to eat and sleep. I know she will get very old and will likely live even longer than me. She's a slow animal, she eats slowly and drinks slowy. But she is so sweet, and an intersting pet to have. She is quiet and neat, and I like her! That's all about my turtle, Momo.

Today's Dog

Buddy, the Dog of the Day
Name:Buddy
Age:One year old
Gender:FemaleBreed:English Springer Spaniel
Home:Washington, Indiana, USA

B
uddy Bear Promise (Buddy for short) is my beautiful male liver/white English Springer Spaniel. He is almost one year old and he loves to have me sit on the ground and let him lick my face and climb all over me. He loves food and adores Lolli, his playmate. He now lives in Washington, Indiana with us.

He lived in a kennel for his first nine months and I just got him in January. He is sweet and playful. He doesn't know any commands yet. He hates being kenneled when he is bad and he cries and tries to tear the kennel apart, so I never leave him there for long. It must remind him of how his life used to be. I love Buddy and hope for many more happy years together.

Today's Cat

Cleo, the Cat of the Day
Name:Cleo
Age:Five years old
Gender:Female
Kind:Cat
Home:Ormond Beach, Florida, USA

C
leo is my mother's cat, and as for her age, well, a lady never tells. Let's just say older than five. For her breed, well a bit of this, a bit of that, and a striped tail! Cleo is listed as the main author of "The Cat Manual," a humor book translated from Cat by Michael Ray Taylor.

Cleo is what my mother terms a "problem child." White, with brown patches and a tall striped flag that my mother calls "the tail from another cat," Cleo is the most perspicacious and persnickety of a litter of four kittens that my mother's lawn care provider discovered abandoned in a field. At his insistence, she took them in "only until they could find homes." She already had two cats, one of whom was quite elderly. She had previously declared that there would be "no more cats" when these two were gone. Although she was not quite yet old, Mom informed us she was getting too old for new cats. She couldn't bear to lose them when they grew old and infirm.

Yet after a couple of weeks, the kittens all had names. From this fact, we in the family knew they had also found a home. I spent long Sunday phone calls listening to descriptions of the antics of little Cleo. Several years later, it remains Cleo who is the first to try such sports as jumping onto the refrigerator, ambushing the visiting cousin, and rearranging the tiles whenever my mother attempts to play Scrabble the old-fashioned way, on a table, rather than on the computer.

Of course, Cleo helps her out on the computer also - and her secret writings there form part of "
The Cat Manual."

Lucky Grace, the Pet of the Day
Name:Lucky Grace
Age:One and a half years old
Gender:Female
Kind:Mini Rex, Netherland Dwarf
Home:Jamul, California, USA

L
ucky Grace is a very loving rabbit. She was rescued by my rabbit rescue along with her adopted sister a few months ago. She is a Mini Rex, Netherland Dwarf mix. Grace is a very playful rabbit. She has a cute trick with her ball ... she will pick it up with her teeth and shake it when she wants attention. She is always willing to make new friends. Grace spends every day running around with best friends (Elle and Bashful). Grace is one of the sweetest rabbits I know.

She is always getting treats and love from me and my family. She eats carrots, hay, lettuce, pellets, and treats. She also has a leash and harness, and once a day goes for a walk around the yard. Grace is so loving and can always turn a frown upside down.

Today's Favorite Pets-4-17-2012

Today's Dog

Joey, the Dog of the Day
Name:Joey
Age:Eight years old
Gender:MaleBreed:Yorkshire Terrier
Home:Queens, New York, USA

T
his is Joey, he's my Yorkshire Terrier, and he just turned eight years old on March 8th! My dog is so sweet and smart. When he wants something, he literally shows you what he wants by taking you to a specific place. (Like if he wants to go out, he leads you to the back door, or if he wants a treat, he points to the treats with his nose.) My dog also loves wearing clothes. When he sees you holding an item of his clothing, he gets so excited and he will sit down and help you dress him by giving you his paws. His toys have names and he knows all of them; if you tell him to get you the ball, he'll get it. If you tell him to get you his stuffed red dog, Rodrico, he will go and get it. If you are upset, he will sit by you and stay with you; I fell down the stairs the other day and for the rest of the day, every time I went up and down the stairs, he would watch me closely, making sure I didn't fall again.

Joey has been in my life since I was twelve and I love him so much. He is a part of the family and I talk to him as if he is a human being himself. He is so sweet, smart, gentle, playful ... the list goes on!

Solange, Simone, the Cat of the Day
Name:Solange, Simone
Age:Two years and a half years old
Gender:Female
Kind:Siamese
Home:Québec, Canada

I
ntroducing Simone and Solange, Siamese cats ... and real Siamese twin sisters! You cannot think of Solange without Simone or the inverse; they are just glued to one another! Those two little sisters are the most loving and precious cats in the world (from an objective point of view!). We first go them for the children but surprisingly, I got very attached to them. Truly, when I wake up with the two of them, sleeping inside my blankets against my stomach, looking at me with the look that says it all (the * I love you so much and I don't need to speak to tell it to you* look), I feel so much love for those two cats that I could think possible. it is really hard to take a good picture of them as they are camera shy and always close their beautiful blue eyes!

Being an anxious person, it happens that I feel stressed, in my bed at night. Then the cats arrive, they start to purr, they literally cuddle me ... and my respiration slows down, my breathing gets better, I start to feel more relaxed ... no meditation needed with those two. They have helped me in a way that many people would not understand and for that, they are my cats of the day every day.

Today's Pet

Gus, the Pet of the Day
Name:Gus
Age:One year old
Gender:Male
Kind:Cashmere Goat
Home:Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA

J
anuary of last year, my oldest doe went into labor. She was having difficulty giving birth so I had to assist her. Her first kid came out with ease. The second kid was stuck in the birth canal because he was so large. I struggled for an hour to get him out. Unfortunately he was deceased by the time I was able to get him out. The third was Gus. I had extremely difficulty getting Gus out. I grabbed a hold of two feet and I pulled. I was not able to get him out. I pulled enough to see that I had a front leg and a back leg. This meant that Gus was folded in the birth canal. His head was down by his rump. I thought for sure that he was dead because he had been in the birth canal for so long, at this point it was close to 2 hours. I pushed his head back to straighten him out so I could pull him out. I managed to get him out. I cried when I hear him make a noise indicating that he was alive. However, his mom was going down hill fast. She was too weak to get up and nurse her two remaining kids. She was losing a lot of blood. After spending the whole night with her, we were able to get the bleeding to stop. I had powdered colostrum that I mixed up to feed Gus and his sister. We were able to save his mother, but had to bottle feed Gus and Faith because she had severe mastitis. We kept the babies with their mom to give her will to live. Every feeding, Danika (the mom) would escort her kids (Gus and Faith) over to us for the feeding. As they were nursing on the bottles, Danika would lick and clean them as if they were nursing on her. It was like an understanding and an appreciation she had for us.

I have included several pictures of Gus. One is his baby picture, then pictures of him as a six month old, and the others are of him today.

He is still very affectionate. He just melts in your hand when you scratch his cheeks and his neck. He has a favorite tree that he plays with every morning. It fell down in the wind, but every morning he rubs on it and pushes it over, and the way that it is laying, it falls back over the other side. So he pushes it and it comes back. We also have a basketball that he loves to push around his pen. Favorite treats are probably peppermint horse treats and animal crackers. We love him very much.
